Outstanding Lions


The Oak Cliff Lions Club of Dallas, Texas was Organized on April 1, 1929, by 35 outstanding community leaders and officially Chartered by Lions Clubs International on April 30, 1929. These leaders built and leave a lasting legacy of foresight and leadership to future leaders and members of the Club.

From its beginnings in the 1920’s through the beginning of the third millennium, The Oak Cliff Lions Club has prospered, built and grown under superb leadership coupled with the benefit of outstanding membership. Its members and leaders have included some of the most distinguished Lions in Lions International.

Dick Self Dr. Richard A. "Dick" Self* was a Charter Member of the Oak Cliff Lions Club in 1929. He served as President of the Club in 1942-43 and as District Governor in 1951-52. Lion Self was held in high esteem throughout Lions Clubs International and in 1954 was elected to a two year term on the Lions Clubs International Board of Directors, serving until 1956. Dr. Self was selected by his peers to the Texas Lions Hall of Fame in 1972. PID Self was named one of the 18 “Cornerstone Lions 1929-2004", in recognition of the Club’s 75th Anniversary Celebration.



Marion B. Snider served as President of the Oak Cliff Lions Club in 1958-59 and was District Governor in 1960-61. He was Director of the Club's Minstrel Show for 22 years before becoming a member of the Park Cities Lions Club. He served as Lions International Pianist for 16 years and received the Ambassador of Goodwill Award, the highest Award of Lions International, in 1969. He holds the Melvin Jones Award, "Life Membership", five International President's Awards and is a member of the Texas Lions Hall of Fame.  PDG Snider was selected one of the 18 "Cornerstone Lions 1929-2004" in honor of the Club’s 75th Anniversary Celebration.



Sylvan Moritz Sylvan Moritz* served as District 2-X1 Governor 1974-75. He was named a Life Member in 1988 and received the International President’s Award in 1975, 1978, and 1985. He became a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1992 and was named to the Texas Lions Hall of Fame in 1998. He served as State Chairman for the 1985 Lions Clubs International Convention held in Dallas and had the Oak Cliff Lions “Extravaganza” Dedicated to him in 1994, and was recognized as one of the 18 “Cornerstone Lions 1929-2004", symbolic of the Club’s 75th Anniversary Celebration.



Bill Melton Bill Melton served as President of the Oak Cliff Lions Club in 1977-78 and as District 2-X1 Governor in 1980-81. In 1983, he was honored with the Ambassador of Good Will Award - highest Award bestowed by Lions Clubs International. He has received the Lions International President's Award; International President's Leadership Medal; International President’s Commendation Award; 100% Club President and 100% District Governor Awards; is a Melvin Jones Fellow; Dr. William S. Harris Fellow; Jack Wiech Fellow; received the "Key of State" for having Sponsored more than 75 New Members into Lionism; Chair, 75th Anniversary Celebration, "Life Member", Lions Clubs International and the Board of the Oak Cliff Lions Club; Oak Cliff "Lion of the Year"; received the Club's Annual "Extravaganza" Dedication in 2002; was named one of the 18 "Cornerstone Lions 1929-2004", symbolic of the Club's 75th Anniversary Celebration; and was honored as a "Grass Roots Lion" and selected to the Texas Lions "Hall of Fame" in 2007.



Wayne Meachum served as President of the Oak Cliff Lions Club in 2000-01 and as District 2-X1 Governor in 2003-04. Since 2001, he has been Producer/Host of the award-winning television program Today in Lions International, seen weekly on Dallas iMedia Television. An original member of the New Club Development Task Force appointed in 2006, by International President Jimmy Ross; he is Chair, Melvin Jones Commemorative Stamp Project; and Sector Coordinator for Campaign SightFirst II. Meachum is a Life Member of the Oak Cliff Lions Club Board of Directors and Camp New Horizons. A Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow and Jack Wiech Fellow, he has received two Dr. William S. Harris Awards and the "Grass Roots Lion" Award. PDG Meachum is the recipient of two International President's Awards, International President's Leadership Medal, and in 2008, received the Ambassador of Good Will Award - highest Award bestowed by Lions Clubs International and a special Presidential Global Extension Award.
